Immediately on entering the basilica, the visitor is struck by the height of the nave : slender columns, copied from the XIIIth century, shoot up to support the cross pieces of the rib-vaults 26 metres (85 feet) above. From the Chancel to the ambulatory, they evoke the sleek trunks of the beech trees in the nearby forest. The stained-glass windows cast their coloured reflections on the stonework, still bright because they have been so recently cut. If the centuries have not yet left their mark, the master craftsmen glass-makers have put their talents into the work. There is to be found here, in fact, an exemplarary demonstration of the art of stained-glass making from 1900 up to the present day, because the Rectors of the shrine were able to select from among the best artists of the period.
